Why Photography

Why did I decide to work as a Fine Art Landscape Photographer in San Antonio? I have had this question asked of me by folks who have known me for years. It is quite a change from my previous career as a Noncommissioned Officer in the United States Army after all. Well there are several aspects to it.

Time for a New Career — Photographer!

First, I was retiring from my first career and needed something to do. As I was transitioning to post-military life, this is one topic that was discussed at length during the process. The military has gotten much better at helping service members transition from military to civilian life. There are classes and workshops, job fairs and interviews, and a lot of folks making sure you are thinking about what it is you are going to do. Now, this was my experience at Joint Base San Antonio’s Fort Sam Houston. And I was a part of the Warrior Transition Battalion due to my medical retirement. So, other folks may have had a different experience during their transition. But mine was fairly positive.

Time for a Change of Pace

Second, I really wanted to do something very different from any previous job (civilian or military). And working as a photographer and artist is definitely that. I am my own boss. And that is both exciting and overwhelming. It is a lot to learn. Not just about the artistry and technical aspects of being a professional photographer. There is the whole business side of things that have to be mastered as well. It would kinda suck to be making amazing images if I never got them out for people to see and (hopefully) add to their own collection.

Time for Me

Lastly, working on my photography and art is therapeutic for me. I have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I often find it difficult to deal with people and effectively communicate with them. Art gives me a way to both communicate on an emotional level with others and it gives me a way to communicate with myself about what is lurking in the dark recesses of my mind.

All and all, it has been interesting so far and I look forward to seeing how it goes from here!
